The Rictus
In the material of the creation of Anaias, The Foundry formed autonomous entities of energy and purpose, referred to as Thoughts, with each given a specific part of creation to observe and maintain. The Vita Obice were charged with ensuring only natural entities were among the living, the Salutis Custos responsible for the measure of lifeforce for all creatures in their cycles of life and death, and the Tempus Ancoris ensuring the flow of Time and Fate across the face of Anaias.
After the Time of the Shattering, the surges of mana that had disrupted the world reached even into the ethereal spaces where the Thoughts held dominion and responsibility. The desperation of the great collective spirit of the peoples and lands of Anaias sent shockwaves into those ethereal spaces affecting a fundamental change in the Thoughts, merging their insubstantial state with fragments trimmed from souls of fallen innocents and desecrated lands, giving them substance and renewed purpose in the physical world.
The Vita Obice were transformed into a predatorial form with an intense hatred of unnatural manifestations; this new form was given the name Edax Animae. Gifted with the tattoo of the Mark of Hunger on their face, their animosity would manifest as intense hunger to consume the ethereal energy released from the death or destruction of fiends, aberrations, and monstrosities. Empowered with the Defiance of Atrocity, they were also much more resilient against the magic and abilities of those same unnatural sources.
The Salutis Custos were transformed into a form of holy might manifesting as a dark being, their essence filtered through the harm of Gor, the darkness of Sar, and the ruin of Des. Their new form was given the name Lator Pestilens, those who harbor a hatred of unnatural life especially that of the undead. Greater still is their hatred for those beings who willingly sacrifice their essence to bring greater imbalance, living beyond their time with becoming vampires or achieving lichdom. Gifted with the tattoo of the Mark of Ravening on their crown, they prefer to hunt intelligent undead to bring an end to their terror and tyranny. Empowered with the Contempt of Gloom, their hunting ends with infusing their weapons with their hatred as a caustic or radiant coating; the attack taylored for the prey.
As the Tempus Ancoris fell into the world, their form was the least changed as their ability to view the Threads of Fate and Time could not be altered. Their responsibility to prevent unnatural forces from preventing the natural course of inescapable fate. The weaving spiral tattoo of the Mark of Requital adorning one hand, from the wrist to the tip of the index finger, allows them to intercede against those forces that would disrupt fate. Empowered with the Deft of Indifference, they are extremely resistant to magic effects or abilities that would entangle or paralyze others.
